Rachel McAdams Biography

Rachel McAdams was born on October 7, 1976, in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. Rachel was raised by her truck driver father, Lance, and mother, Sandy, a nurse, alongside her younger brother and sister, Daniel and Kayleen. Wasting no time, Rachel began taking her steps toward stardom at the tender age of 4.

In 1980, Rachel began competitive skating and continued to compete well into her teenage years.

Rachel McAdams gives up skating

But when skating began to take its toll on Rachel’s body and mind, she became drawn to acting. And after spending just one summer at theater camp, Rachel decided to head to York University in Toronto.

At York, Rachel studied theater, where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors.

In 1995, Rachel won an award for her role in a one-act high school play called I Live in A Little Town after it was shown at the well-known Ontario Showcase at the Sears Drama Festival.

Rachel began her acting career with a foray on television, which began with her role as a teenage girl struggling with bulimia in the Disney series The Famous Jett Jackson (2001). After another guest role on the TV series Shotgun Love Dolls, Rachel began starring in made-for-TV movies in Canada.

McAdams in Mean Girls

It was after she was nominated for a Genie Award (Canada’s version of the Oscars) for her feature debut in My Name Is Tanino (2002) that Rachel believed she had what it took to take on Hollywood.

Rachel wasted no time in landing roles and got her start opposite Rob Schneider in the teen comedy The Hot Chick (2002). Although the film wasn’t a blockbuster, it did get Rachel noticed and landed her the breakout role she was hoping for.

After a short return to television in 2003, on the television series Slings & Arrows, Rachel landed the ultimate part when she starred as uber-bitch Regina George opposite the then-rising star, Lindsay Lohan, in Mean Girls. Although Rachel originally auditioned for the role that ultimately went to Lindsay, producers of the movie knew she’d nail the part of Regina.

McAdams amazes in The Notebook

It was her role in Mean Girls that turned teenaged girls onto her, but it was her role in The Notebook (2004) that made the rest of the world take notice of Rachel McAdams. Her role as Allie Hamilton allowed fans to sympathize with Rachel’s character and made her a household name.

But Rachel wasn’t one to rest on her laurels. In 2005, she starred in 3 more movies: Wedding Crashers, alongside Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson; Red Eye, with Cillian Murphy; and The Family Stone, opposite Luke Wilson and Sarah Jessica Parker.

McAdams dating Ryan Gosling

With her upcoming role in 2007’s Married Life, there’s no doubt that we’ll be seeing plenty more of Rachel for years to come.

On the personal front, Rachel was dating her The Notebook costar and fellow Canadian, Ryan Gosling for 3 years, but the two recently went their separate ways and she is currently single.

Health Q&A

Dishwashing is destroying my hands

Dear Emily,

I feel like I spend most of my day washing dishes and my hands are beginning to look like it. They look dry and scaly, and I was hoping you could give me some pointers on how to make them look beautiful again.

Thanks,
Yolanda

Hi Yolanda,

There are a few ways to minimize the effects that water and household cleaning agents are having on your hands. First, buy some rubber gloves and use them any time you do dishes, whether it’s a plate and a glass that need washing, or a sink full of dishes.

Next, keep a moisturizing cream by the sink. After you finish cleaning up, put some cream on your hands to soften your hands.

Finally, you can always buy a dishwasher! If it’s getting to the point where you’re spending the majority of your day on dishes, a dishwasher is a worthy investment.

Finally, at least once a week, before bedtime, apply a thick amount of cream to your hands, put on some thick wool or cotton mitts and go to bed. This will help restore your hands’ youthful appearance.

Salt intake reversal

Dear Emily,

I do my best to avoid salt because I know that too much of it is no good for me. When I go over to someone’s house (read: my mother-in-law), however, I am sometimes forced to eat salt-laden foods (well, I just don’t want to be rude). Is there any way to remove the salt from my body afterwards by eating or drinking something?

Mina

Hi Mina,

It becomes difficult to keep up our good habits when we’re guests at another person’s house, especially our mothers-in-law! But there is a way to reverse large amounts of salt that you ingest.

First, drink lots of water – double what you’d normally drink. This will flush out your system and remove the impurities from your body.

Second, purchase dandelion tea, which can be found in natural foods stores. According to renowned dietitian Elizabeth Cerqueira, dandelion tea will flush your system of unnecessary salt and sodium, and hydrate it.

Hope this helps,
Emily

The tampon issue

Hi Emily,

A friend of mine swears by tampons and has never even used a sanitary pad. I, on the other hand, was taught that tampons are dangerous and leave women prone to infection and other vaginal complications.

Can you clear up my confusion?

Emma

Hi Emma,

You’re not alone; a lot of women I speak to, especially the old school ones, agree with what you were taught. Fortunately, all these rumors about tampons are not true.

The one problem that may arise from tampon-use is TSS, or Toxic Shock Syndrome. TSS is a potentially-fatal disease that results from a bacterial toxin. There were only five cases reported in 1997 and it’s very rare, but if you use a super-absorbent tampon and are having very light days, you may develop TSS.

As for infections and vaginal complications, there have been no reported cases of such. So long as you change your tampon every few hours and use the lightest absorbency necessary for your flow, there is no danger in using them.

Emily

Weird menstrual cycle

Emily,

Sometimes I get my period on time with no problems; other times I get it late, it lasts for about 11 days and I’m in pain for most of them. What’s the deal and is there any way to regulate it?

This has been the story of my life for about 12 years now. I’ve had two children and plan to have more. Any help is much appreciated.

Georgia

Dear Georgia,

The only thing that can help regulate your period is the birth control pill, but since you want to have more children, taking it is out of the question.

Every woman’s body is different and although the pill would have us believe that a woman’s period should run every 28 days, women’s periods are actually anywhere from 24 to 35 days apart.

If your period is giving you this much grief, I recommend that you find yourself an endocrinologist and have him study the hormonal changes throughout your cycle.

I don’t recommend that you treat yourself, but rather consult a professional and find ways to regulate your period and minimize the pain associated with it.

Good luck,
Emily

Top 10 Triceps Exercises

By Dana Laurier

If you enjoy being able to extend your arm or bring it down towards your body, then you should thank your triceps muscles for that. Of course, you probably care more about making your triceps more prominent, and that’s a good thing too.

To develop and define your triceps, you should work them out at least once a week and ensure that you complete each repetition correctly and without using momentum. Each exercise should have three sets and your muscle should be exhausted by the last repetition amid every set.

Here, now, are the top 10 triceps exercises you may want to start using in your workouts.

Triceps exercises #10
Straight Bar Triceps Pushdowns

Place a straight bar on the upper part of a cable machine. Stand with your legs shoulder width apart, knees bent. Hold the bar on either end, with palms facing down and start with the bar close to your chest. Keeping your elbows as close to your sides as possible, pull the bar down toward your thighs, hold for a second and slowly use your triceps to bring the bar back up towards your chest.

Variation: Place your hands on the bar with palms facing up.

Triceps exercises #9
Rope Pushdowns

Place a rope on the upper part of a cable machine. With palms facing each other, grab each side of the rope and stand with your legs a little closer than shoulder width apart. Leaning forward slightly but ensuring that your back is straight and your abs are tight, start with the rope at chest level and lower the cable until your arms are straight, making sure that you keep your elbows close to your body at all times.

Variation: Hold the rope with one hand and do each arm individually.

Triceps exercises #8
Standing Triceps Extensions

Stand erect with your feet shoulder-width apart (if you’re not familiar with this exercise or have back problems, sit on a chair). Hold a dumbbell in one hand and extend your arm overhead. Place your other hand against the triceps you will be working and ensure that you keep your arm straight, moving only at the elbow (your forearm). Slowly lower the dumbbell until your arm is at a 90° angle, pause for a second, then slowly lift the weight back up to the starting position.

Variation: Use a heavier weight and perform the exercise using both hands.

Triceps exercises #7
Low Cable Single Arm Extensions

Attach a closed cable handle to the lower part of the cable machine. Grab the handle, face the opposite direction of the machine, hold the cable overhead behind you, elbow bent at a 90° angle. Keep your back straight, your abs tight and your elbow close to your head throughout the exercise. Extend your arm straight up overhead, hold for a second and slowly bring your arm back down to the starting position.

Variation: Place a rope onto the cable and use both hands to lift.

Triceps exercises #6
Lying Barbell Triceps Extensions
Lie on a bench with your knees bent and feet on the bench (try to keep your lower back pressed into the bench at all times). Hold a barbell overhead, arms extended over your chest, with hands shoulder width apart. Keeping your elbows in position, slowly lower the barbell toward your forehead without touching, hold for a second and press the weight back up until you’re in your starting position.

Variation: Perform the exercise on a decline bench.

Triceps exercises #5
Bench dips

Sit on the side of a flat bench, and place your hands should width apart, palms facing down. Lift your butt off the bench and place your feet as far in front in you as possible so that your shoulders are only three or four inches away from your hands. Don’t lockout your elbows and keep them close to your body. Slowly lower your body toward the ground. Once you’re down as far as you can go, lift your body back to the starting position.

Variation: When this becomes too easy for you, place your legs on another bench.

Triceps exercises #4
Lying Dumbbell Extensions
Sit on a bench and place your legs on the ground. Hold the dumbbells in your hand at the uppermost part of your thighs (it’s best to have someone hand them to you when you’re in position). Lift the weights toward your chest and lie down, keeping your back and abs tight at all times. Lift the weights so that they’re above your head and your palms are facing each other. Lower the dumbbells until they’re close to your face and don’t shift your elbows, then lower your upper arms until the dumbbells are behind your head. Slowly lift the weights back up to the starting position.

Variation: Do this exercise one arm at a time to ensure proper form.

Triceps exercises #3
Triceps Kickback With Dumbbells

Using a flat bench, place your knee and hand on the bench (from the same side of your body) and bend at the hip, ensuring that your back is flat. In the other hand, hold the dumbbell with elbow bent at a 90° angle and kept close to your body. Slowly extend your elbow back until your arm is straight, pause for a second, then lower the weight back to the stating position.

Variation: Instead of using a bench, bend over, keeping your knees soft and your back flat, and perform the exercise.

Triceps exercises #2
Hands Close Pushups
Place yourself in a pushup position, but place your hands closer together. As your body nears the ground, make sure that your elbows remain close to your body, otherwise you’ll end up working your chest. Once you’re near the ground, lift yourself back up to the starting position.

Variation: Place your feet on a Swiss ball and perform the pushups.

Triceps exercises #1
Dips
Find a dip machine and get yourself on it, facing the machine. Grasp each handle on either side and raise your body by straightening out your elbows and slowly lower yourself so that your elbows are at a 90° angle, hold for a second, then raise your body to the starting position.

Variation: When this gets too easy, place a dumbbell between your feet and perform the exercise.

Develop sexy triceps

Most men agree that seeing a woman with well-defined arms is quite sexy, and it’s even sexier watching that woman lift her own body weight via pushups and dips, so get to work and build your strength and your sexy body.

5 Habits Of Millionaire Women

By Amanda Rice

Making the first million is the most difficult, as most millionaire women would admit. And save for the heiresses, like Paris Hilton, and the divorcees, like Heather Mills, women who earned their keep via hard work did so by adopting a few key habits that ensured that their bank accounts would reach the 7-digit figure.

If you depend on anyone for money or to balance your finances, it’s time you woke up and discovered that if you want to be a financial success, you need to pay attention to the money you make and the money you spend.

Do you want to be a millionaire? Well, what woman doesn’t, really? Think of all those shoes and vacations by the beach. It’s all too good to pass up, but that first million definitely won’t come easy. So what did these millionaire women do to make their millions?

They implemented these habits.

Millionaire women habits #1
Place value on your time
Many women I meet in my everyday life tend to give most of their time to others, for fear of being considered “self-absorbed.” But if you want to achieve success in life, you need to make it clear to yourself and others that your time is valuable.

If you have a plan to open up your own business or hope to land a CEO position with a corporation, you need to devote your time to a plan. You need to spend some time focusing solely on where you want to go and how you plan to get there, complete with a timeline breakdown and expected achievements.

Keep in mind that it’s not going to be easy; you’re going to have to make many sacrifices along the way, and that includes putting relationships, and perhaps family, on hold.

Millionaire women habits #2
Take calculated risks

Life isn’t easy and making a boatload of money might not happen upon your first attempt, either. Risks are a necessary evil of potential moneymakers and, if you want to make money, you’re going to have spend some first.

Ani DiFranco, a famous singer and entertainer, started her own record label, Righteous Babes Records, at 18 years of age and with only $50 (she didn’t have much more than that to her name). Now, she’s a millionaire in her own right and she did it on her own terms (she could’ve signed a lucrative deal with a major record label but wanted to maintain her artistic freedom).

Before she jumped into her venture, however, she assembled a business plan and then took a calculated risk. And if you want to achieve such a level of success, you’ll need to take smart risks, otherwise you’ll never triumph.

Millionaire women habits #3
Don’t earn to spend
Many women I know don’t invest their money in anything… or even save it for that matter. While it’s okay to buy yourself the occasional little black dress , it’s more important to think about your long-term financial future.

Whether you start by putting $100 away every month or “investing” in a new business, you need to stop spending every penny you earn on items that don’t reap a profit.

Millionaire women habits #4
Know your market

No matter what you plan on doing, whether it’s create and sell a new line of high chairs for infants, open up a high-end furniture store or put out a Pilates magazine, you need to study your market and its surroundings ad nauseum.

Spend some time and money on researching your competition, potential locations, recent trends, customer preferences, and everything in between. If you want to be successful, you will have to spend some time living in what it is you want to do.

And don’t just explore your market; explore upcoming trends and try to apply them to your business model. Most millionaires agree that being ahead of the trend is better than being in it.

Millionaire women habits #5
Think big

Many women are afraid to think big because they’re always being told about how risky everything is. But you need to become more optimistic and confident in your abilities and what you can accomplish.

If someone tells you that you can’t do something, use that as ammunition to prove to yourself that you can. If you make a decision to start up a new business, invest in your invention or take the lead position of a company, go at it with full force and turn negative or skeptic energy into a positive practice.

Of course, this is not to imply that you should be ridiculous in your ideas, but exploring a possible countrywide expansion for a business that is presently booming in your city is a grand and phenomenal idea.

Habits of millionaire women

With the right mentality and dedication, if you want to make a million dollars, you can. There will be times when the chips are down and you will feel like giving up… we all do. But if you simply hang in there and persevere, there is no doubt that you can reach your goals.

Until next time, I look forward to seeing you at the annual millionaire women’s club get-togethers.
